From Barley to Brew: The Story Behind Spice Route Pale

Available in Mid-October

A collaboration with Thomas Fawcett & Sons and their Halcyon Pale Ale Malt

There’s more to a great beer than hops, yeast and water. We believe that choosing the right malt is just as important, which is why our latest collaboration brings together two traditional family businesses with a shared passion for quality.

Spice Route Pale 4.2% ABV is a collaboration between Batemans Brewery and Thomas Fawcett & Sons, one of Britain’s longest-established maltsters. At the heart of the brew is Fawcett’s Halcyon Pale Ale Malt, helping to provide the foundation for this distinctive pale ale.

Thomas Fawcett & Sons has been producing malt at its Castleford site since 1809 and is now in its eighth generation as a family business. The company combines traditional malting expertise with modern production methods, while continuing to champion heritage varieties such as Halcyon.

The malt behind the beer

Halcyon is a classic pale ale malt from the Fawcett range. Its specifications make it well suited to pale ale brewing, providing high extract potential and a consistent malt base.

For Spice Route Pale, this malt provides an ideal canvas for the beer’s more distinctive ingredients. Once the malt has done its work in the mash, the brew is transformed with a subtle aroma and flavour of spicy pink peppercorn and warming ginger root, creating a beer that is bright, fresh and aromatic.

The result is a pale ale that balances its underlying malt character with an invigorating burst of spice.

A meeting of traditional craftsmanship

The collaboration is a natural fit. Both Batemans and Thomas Fawcett & Sons are family businesses with long histories, strong connections to British brewing and a belief that quality ingredients make a difference.

Fawcett’s approach to malting is deliberately unhurried. The company says it takes longer than average to malt its barley because flavour should never be compromised for speed or cost. It also carefully selects its barley following each harvest, championing heritage malts that give brewers the opportunity to create beers with their own distinctive character.

That philosophy sits comfortably alongside Batemans’ own approach to brewing: taking great British ingredients and turning them into beers with character, flavour and a sense of place.

The Spice Route

The inspiration behind Spice Route Pale is all about flavour and discovery.

At 4.2% ABV, it is a refreshing pale ale with a bright, aromatic character, combining the subtle contribution of the Halcyon malt with the spice of pink peppercorn and ginger.

It’s a beer designed to be different, fresh and approachable, but with enough spice and complexity to keep your taste buds interested.

Spicy. Aromatic. Fresh.

That’s the essence of Spice Route Pale.

From maltster to brewery

Every pint of Spice Route Pale represents a journey that begins long before the beer reaches the bar, from carefully selected barley, through the malting process at Fawcett’s Castleford maltings, to the brewhouse at Batemans’ Salem Bridge Brewery in Wainfleet.

It’s a collaboration built around a shared appreciation for traditional craftsmanship and quality ingredients, bringing together the expertise of the maltster and the brewer in one distinctive beer.

So, next time you enjoy a pint of Spice Route Pale, raise a glass to the journey behind it and to the people who help turn barley into beer.
