A quiet but significant transformation has been taking place behind the scenes here at Batemans Brewery

Over the past few weeks, new tanks have arrived on site, scaffolding has surrounded the Head Brewer’s Office, and careful structural work has been underway beneath our historic fermenting vessels.

A legacy built to last

Our fermenting vessels have been at the heart of Batemans brewing since 1953, when they were installed by George Bateman as part of a major evolution of the brewery.

At the same time, George made the decision to remove the pear trees from the adjoining field – a practical move to prevent fruit flies interfering with the brewing process in his newly developed fermenting rooms. It’s a small but telling detail that reflects the care, foresight and attention to quality that continues to define Batemans to this day.

For more than 70 years, these vessels have quietly done their job, fermenting beer that has been enjoyed across generations. In fact, it’s estimated they’ve played a role in producing well over three quarters of a billion pints!

Supporting the weight of history

Recently, we identified that one of the vessels had begun to shift slightly. Further investigation revealed that, after decades of continuous use and the immense weight they carry, parts of the structure were starting to settle into the original foundations.

It’s a testament to the build quality – and to the brewery’s heritage – that this is only now becoming an issue.

To ensure these vessels continue to perform for decades to come, specialist work is now underway to reinforce their foundations. Structural supports (props) are being carefully installed beneath the vessels, securing them in place and protecting the integrity of the brewing process.

Precision work, done right

This is no small task. Working within a live brewery environment requires a high level of skill and precision.

The team on site has been carrying out the work with great care, ensuring minimal disruption while maintaining the highest safety and quality standards. Despite the complexity, everything is progressing smoothly and, pleasingly, ahead of schedule.

Now the scaffolding around the Head Brewer’s Office is coming down and the final supports are put into place, we’re starting to see the results of that effort.

Investing in the future of Batemans with new Fermentation Vessels

Alongside this structural work, the arrival of new tanks marks another important step forward. These additions will help support the next chapter of brewing at Batemans, ensuring we can continue to produce the beers people know and love, while also giving us flexibility for the future.

It’s this balance – respecting heritage whilst embracing progress – that has always defined Batemans Brewery.

The brewing process continues to evolve, but our commitment remains the same: to brew great beer, with care, consistency, and character.
