Scout - Batemans Brewery Dog

Meet Scout: Wainfleet’s Most Mischievous Four-Legged Local

Every brewery has its characters, but here at Batemans, one of the most infamous doesn’t even work here, he just visits every single day. Allow us to introduce Scout, the Bateman family’s German Pointer and full-time adventurer, escape artist and unofficial Brewery mascot.

The Houdini of Wainfleet

No gate, fence, door or latch has ever successfully contained Scout. He has an extraordinary ability to slip away from home and trot straight to his favourite spot, the Brewery yard, to see what the team are up to and, more importantly, who might be eating.

It’s now such a regular occurrence that Scout is even mentioned in our caravan site information, so guests know that if a friendly brown dog wanders past their awning, he’s not lost, he’s simply on his rounds.

A Dog with a Taste for Trouble

Scout is well known with staff and residents (and several unsuspecting holidaymakers) for his legendary love of food:

  • He’s stolen sausages off campsite BBQs.
  • He’s raided picnic baskets with military precision.
  • He once ate an engagement party cake.
  • And he has perfected the guilty-but-charming look that means nobody stays cross for long.

Returned by… a Hearse?

Possibly his most famous escapade was the day he disappeared into Wainfleet, only to be returned home by the local funeral directors, in the back of a hearse. Only Scout could turn a quiet day at the brewery into a story retold for years.

A Proper Batemans Character

Scout is a rescue dog, full of personality, mischief and heart. He brings laughter to the Brewery team, affection to the campsite, and endless stories to share. In many ways, he sums up the Batemans spirit perfectly, unexpected, unforgettable, and absolutely part of the family.

A true Batemans character wandering Wainfleet, charming visitors out of their sausages, and occasionally arriving home in a hearse… only at Batemans!
